Introduction

This manual guides you through the updating process of Visma Nova programs.

About this manual

This purpose of this manual is to help in updating Visma Nova programs.

Persons performing updates have to know the basics of Visma Nova programs. We recommend that updating is carried out by the company’s administrator or an authorised Visma Nova representantive.

Quick guide

This section outlines the updating process of Visma Nova programs in brief. However, we recommend you read though the entire manual.

Update

A new update version will be announced in Visma Community (https://community.visma.com). Carry out the update as follows:

  1. Log in to the computer to be updated as system administrator.

  2. Check that the latest Windows updates have been updated

  3. Visma Nova 10.1 version needs the Microsoft OLE DB Driver for the SQL Server to work. See additional info below this list

  4. Take backup copies of Visma Nova databases and the Visma Nova installation directory.

  5. Download the Visma Nova installation package from Visma Community.

  6. Unzip the package in directory C:\temp, for example.

  7. Make sure that Visma Nova programs are closed. For further information, please see section 3.2.

  8. Install the update in the Visma Nova installation directory.

  9. Run SQL scripts, if possible run scripts with SQL Server System Administrator level credentials

  10. Perform any other actions described in the version release notes.

  11. Make sure that the programs start and the update has succeeded.

Note! Make sure that you have selected Finland on regional settings!

Windows Control panel | Region and there under Formats-tab Format = Suomi and under Location-tab Home location = Finland.

Note! Visma Nova 10.1 needs the Microsoft OLE DB Driver for the SQL Server to work.

Upgrading to a newer database driver will improve the stability of the database connection and speed up database operations in Nova.

You can prepare in advance for the Visma Nova 10.1 update by ensuring that the Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server has been installed on all computers on which Visma Nova is used. If the driver has not been installed, you can download it here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/connect/oledb/download-oledb-driver-for-sql-server?view=sql-server-ver15

Download and install the driver that corresponds to the operating system bit.

Note! The Microsoft OLE DB driver for the SQL Server runs on all SQL server versions supported by Nova. If the driver has not been installed on the computer, the following error will occur when Nova is started (3706):

This means that you must install the Microsoft OLE DB Driver on the computer in question.

Note! Before installing the OLEDB driver, make sure that the 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Visual c++ 2015 - 2022 installations are installed.

Updating

This section outlines the updating procedure.

Backup copying

Take a backup copy of the entire ..\NOVA directory and SQL Server databases, to allow for restoring them if the update fails.

Backup copying from the start-up screen

Information

Note! The Visma start-up screen can only be copied from the computer that the SQL Server is installed on. Backup copies cannot be made on network drives.

To be able to take backup copies, you need to belong to the Visma Nova administrator group.

  1. Start Visma Nova.

  2. On the start-up screen, select

    and then select Backup copying and restoration in Management.

  3. Select databases to be copied and check the backup copy´s path. The backup path is always located in the machine where SQL Server is installed.

  1. Click Backup copy selected -button and answer the question given by the program

  1. Program informs once the backup copying is ready.

Backup copying of SQL Server databases

Backup copies of databases should be taken in accordance with the SQL Server software supplier’s instructions or if your company has another backup copying procedure, then according to those instructions.

An authorised Visma Nova installation representative takes backup copies automatically during installation using Microsoft SQL Server tools or files provided by Visma.

Before installing updates

Take the following into consideration:

Download and install the driver that corresponds to the operating system bit.

Note! The Microsoft OLE DB driver for the SQL Server runs on all SQL server versions supported by Nova. If the driver has not been installed on the computer, the following error will occur when Nova is started (3706):

This means that you must install the Microsoft OLE DB Driver on the computer in question.

Note! Before installing the OLEDB driver, make sure that the 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Visual c++ 2015 - 2022 installations are installed.

  • Log in to the computer to be updated as system administrator.

  • The installer enables the Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) service.

  • If for some reason the MSMQ service is not activated automatically, it must be enabled manually. More info on Microsoft webpage

  • Take backup copies of Visma Nova databases and the Visma Nova installation directory.

  • Download the installation package from Visma Community under Visma Nova -> Ohjelmistopäivitykset. https://community.visma.com

Information

Tip: You can copy the installation package at the root of the [J:] drive for workstation installation, for example.

  • Unzip the package in directory C:\temp, for example.

  • Before installing the update, make sure that all Visma Nova programs are closed on both the server and the workstations.

  • In multi-computer environments, you can check or close Nova programs that are open in Computer Management -> Shared Folders -> Open Files. Select the files to be closed and then right-click Close Open Files.

Installing updates

Updates on the server (applies also to single-computer environment)

  1. Unzip the downloaded installation package to C:\TEMP, for example.

  2. Run Setup.exe as a system administrator (right-click setup.exe -> Run as Administrator).

  3. Select the installation language and click Next

  4. Select the applications to be installed and click Next

Install following packages:

  • Visma Nova Server

  • Visma Nova Workstation (Default)

Update phase 4

  1. Click Install to confirm the applications to be installed. If necessary, you can click Back to change your selections

  2. Click Next to start Visma Nova Server update installation

Update phase 6

  1. Read installation instructions, accept them and continue installation by clicking Next

  2. Enter the installation path or click the ... button to select it.

In server installation the installation path is e.g C:\Novajako\Nova

Update phase 8

In single-computer environment installation path is e.g C:\Nova

When the installation path has been selected click Next.

  1. When the installation is complete, click Finish. The installer automatically continues with the next application to be installed.

  2. When all applications have been installed, click Next and in the summary window, click Close to complete the installation.

  3. Click the desktop shortcut (J:\Nova\my\Infoline.exe or C:\Nova\my\Infoline.exe) to start Visma Nova

  4. Select settings and click

    in the top right corner of the Infoline screen to determine settings. Select Run SQL scripts in Management.

  • Use the default options and click OK to start a new SQL run.

Update phase 12

  1. After running the scripts, close the window and sign out of Visma

  2. The server update is complete. The workstations will be updated next.

Update on workstation (Default)

  1. Before installing the update, make sure that all Visma Nova programs are closed on the server and on the workstations.

  2. Copy the installation package to C:\TEMP, for example.

  3. Run Setup.exe as a system administrator (right-click setup.exe and Run as administrator).

  4. Select the installation language and click Next

  5. Select the program to be installed. Following programs to be installed on workstation:

  • Visma Nova Workstation (Default)

  • Enable MSMQ (mandatory)

and click Next

Update phase 5

  1. Click Install to confirm the applications to be updated. If necessary, you can click Back to change your selections.

  2. Click Next to start Visma Nova Workstation update installation.

  3. Read installation instructions, accept them and continue installation by clicking Next

  4. Enter the installation path or click the ... button to select it. Depending on the installation method, select one of the following options

Default workstation installation, applications are started from the server

The update is installed in a shared directory, such as J:\Nova.

Update phase 9

After determining the installation path, click Next.

  1. When the installation is complete, click Close.

  2. When all applications have been installed, click Next and in the summary window, click Close to complete the installation.

  3. Start Visma Nova from the desktop shortcut and test to make sure it works.

Update on workstation (Local)

NOTICE! Run update installation only if needed!

  1. Before installing the update, make sure that all Visma Nova programs are closed on the server and on the workstations.

  2. Copy the installation package to C:\TEMP, for example.

  3. Run Setup.exe as a system administrator (right-click setup.exe and Run as administrator).

  4. Select the installation language and click Next

  5. Select the program to be installed. Following programs to be installed on workstation:

  • Visma Nova Workstation (Local)

  • Enable MSMQ (mandatory)

and click Next

Update phase 5

  1. Click Install to confirm the applications to be updated. If necessary, you can click Back to change your selections.

  2. Click Next to start Visma Nova Workstation update installation.

  3. Read installation instructions, accept them and continue installation by clicking Next

  4. Enter the UNC-file path to Nova common files filepath –field. The path is where the Nova server part is installed. eg.: \palvelin\novajako\nova

Applications are installed locally, which means that all applications will be copied from the server to the workstation. In this method Nova will copy program related files (.exe, .dll) to the workstation. This is why Nova needs the UNC-path, where the server part is installed

Update phase 9

  1. Enter the local installation folder from which the program will be run on the local machine.. eg. C:\Visma\Nova

After determining the installation path, click Next.

  1. When the installation is complete, click Close.

  2. When all applications have been installed, click Next and in the summary window, click Close to complete the installation.

  3. Start Visma Nova from the desktop shortcut.

  4. In the Nova main view (infoline.exe),

    - icon will appear in the upper right corner if the server has a newer / updated version of Visma Nova. By pressing this button locally installed Nova will upgrade itself to the same level as Nova on the server.
